  • New Civ Ideas

Here's a some quick thoughts on some new civs, and their unique units. Thoughts and additions?

Spain, Conquistador (Cavalry, move +1). Classic Civ 2 civilization.

Poland, Hussar (Cavalry, attack +1). Believe it or not, they were a military powerhouse in the middle ages.

Scotland, Highlander (Swordsman, move +1). Attack +1 would probably be more historically "accurate" (claymores), but it's been done already. Ach!

Finland, Ski Infantry (Infantry, move +1). Reinact the "continuation war" against Russia?

Mongols, Mangudai (horsemen, +1 attack). I see these guys as having the same unit mod as the Iroquis, so they'd replace them. They conquered most of the world, but that isn't good enough to make the cut for part three. Wow.

Carthaginians, War Elepant (+1 attack knight). Replaces India, and the Elephant finally gets the correct modifier. Perhaps their Elephant could move through mountains, as well.

Parthians, Horse Archer (+1 defense horsemen). Enemies of Ancient Rome and predecessor to Persia. "Parting" or Parthian shots from horseback create a better defensive unit.

Byzantines, Cataphract (+1 move knight). Gibbon's least favorite empire should be given a chance in this game. Ecumenical Counsels as an optional wonder? Building it would cause Germany, France, and England to like you less.

Assyria, Battering Ram (Early 3 strengh bombard unit). How come there are no unique artillery units? The warmongering Assyrians correct this injustice. The battering ram would be available from the start, encouraging early conquest.

Hapsburgs, Seige Cannon (+1 attack cannon). Maybe not the best choice of units for this legendary "destroyed by inbreeding" empire, but we need unique bombard units, darn it! Of course, this unit brings to mind the victory in the seige of Vienna, which is the reason I'm not handing out towels in a Turkish bath house and my sister isn't in a harem.

I was hesitant, but here's my less well thought out ideas for "civ traits."

Spain (Expansionist, Religious) They dominated the new world for several centuries. As for "Religious" three words: Auto-de-faye

Poland (Commercial, Industrius) I'm not really happy with this choice. Any Poles out there who can do better?

Scotland (Militaristic, Industrius) Certainly militaristic, but I'm not so sure about the other mod.

Finland (Commercial, Industrius) I think this combo is appropriate here. Considered "Militaristic" for a moment. Does strong defense against aggressors make one a militaristic society?

    Mongols (Militaristic, Expansionist) Easy choices.

Carthaginians (Militaristic, Commerical). Commercial hints at Meditterrean trade, although I'm not sure how much they really did.

Parthians (Militaristic, Industrious). Is there an ancient to mideval civilization that isn't militaristic?

Byzantines (Commercial, Religious). I think this is very appropriate. They were major players in both spheres.

Assyria (Militaristic, Scientific) An odd combination, but it fits them well. Nineveh was a major center of ancient knowledge, and there reputation for war cruelty is well-earned.

Hapsburgs (Commercial, Militaristic) "Inbred" wasn't available as a modifier. It would be fun to see the leader graphic get more and more deformed facially (and mentally) as each age passed.
