I really feel with mods crashing so easily without any clear indication of what's wrong, that there should be some kind of meaningful error messages for the most common problems.
eg: Cannot find art folder for unit named 'x'
or There is no Civilpedia entry for 'y'
and so on. These should not necessarily be fatal errors. So you could be asked if you wish to continue the game.
Separately, perhaps we need a diagnotic utility, some kind of precompiler, that looks at a mod and gives a list of preceived or potential errors and warnings.
