  • 800x640 resolution?

    i would like to play civ3 on my laptop. it's kinda old so my screen can only do 800x600 max.

    i tried the keepres=1 in the ini file but that does not seem to work? does anyone here have been able to play at 800x600 or is this not feasible...

    i also tried video mode=800 as suggested in another thread but that doesn't seem to work either...

    thanks in advance for your comments and suggestions.

    as far as i can tell, it can't be done.

    the game is designed to only run at 1024x768.

    well, maybe it would work if you can set a desktop res larger than your display res... but then you'd have to scroll around just to see the whole thing at once, which would be undesireable for a game, to say the least.
    it's just my opinion. can you dig it?

      Well, I take it you mean at minimum 1024x768 - it looks quite nice at 1600x1200. Anyway, the videocard of many old or low-end laptops is in fact able to deliver higher resolutions than 800x600, it's only the build-in screen which is stuck at 800x600. If this is the case with your laptop, you can connect an external monitor and use that one instead. Of course this will make your laptop MUCH less portable, but unfortunately it's the only way

        How to change res?

        How do you change the resolution in the game? I can't see an option for it...
        Cheers

          in the civilization3.ini file, add the line:

          keepres=1

          at the end (or wherever). then, assuming your desktop res is higher than 1024x768, the game will just use your desktop res. well it'll use 10x7 too, but that's no change

          the game is a LOT more fun at high res... problem is it's a lot slower, as well. my p3@840 is only good for 1280x960... 1600x1200 is a slideshow.

            I ran into a problem using the keepres=1 line. I have my resolution set at 1152 x whatever and I discovered that everytime I went into the science advisor screen, then back to the game, the black borders that are around the city names were offset. The problem went away as soon as I got rid of the line.
