Civ 3 would run, now won't

I've been playing Civ 3 for a few days (very nice) with no problems but today I tried to run it and problem. The game attempts to start, I can here a click from the monitor as it changes settings but then it stops with a black screen. When I ctrl/ alt del, it shows it as not responding and I can then close it down. CPU usage shows 100%. I did change the scan rate of my monitor from 60hz to 85hz @1600*1200, but have now changed it back with no affect.
Other games (RTCW) still run OK.

I've reinstalled a few times but it's still the same.

win 2K
firebird 800
450k RAM
100Gb HD(s)
GEforce 3 200 Platinum
Iiyama 512 22"

This is killing me as I'm off work with a broken arm and am going out of my tiny mind.
