  • who wants to help a dumb little girl? please

I think i must be really thick because I followed Plutarck's tutorial on how to add new units and I still get a fatal error when I try to build the unit. Let me outline what I did -

    1. I used CivCopyTool to add in 1 unit copied from worker, named miner

    2. I edited the unit in the Hacked editor to the stats I wanted.

    3. I added an addition to the 'pedia copying the worker's entry and changing anything referencing worker to miner.

    4. I modified the pediaicons.txt, copying the worker entry and editing it to reflect the miner unit.

    5. I double checked that the miner folder and the miner.ini are in the art\units folder.

Now I start my game, try to build the unit and it pukes. I really dunno what I'm doing wrong, any ideas?

appreciate any help, thanks a bunch

I believe your crashes is due to the copying of the pediaicons.txt as workers is one of those units that changes looks with eras. And I doubt that is the case for your miners.
If the animation is not there, lets create it!! :D

May be the problem is Copy Tool. Try add unit with hacked editor. Never had any prob with it.

First of all, you can't have a specialist worker, which is what I suspect you're trying to do. I tried the same thing myself, but I discovered that ALL the Worker flags have to selected or the AI won't recognize it. I tried to make a Farmer worker who only irrigates but it didn't work. That might be part your problem.

Secondly, it sounds to me that you're doing to much with the copies. The CopyTool takes care of most of the details you're doing yourself. All you really have to do is alter the Civilopedia text, the CopyTool just duplicates the existing Worker text. I've never had to do anything with the pediaicons.txt file, or even had to bother with the Art folder. It's possible that maybe some of the things you've changed are giving the game hiccups.

And it is possible about the era art someone else mentioned. I'm having a similar problem with Armies. As soon as I click on the unit in my build list, the game crashes. However I was able to copy a Worker with no problem before so I can't be certain.

A very simple way of stopping them from building mines on your grassland/plains is to remove the mining bonuses from those terrains. And if you add a mining bonus to your forests, they won't cut those down when you don't want them to either. Believe me, I know what you're going through, I've been there myself. I was so disappointed when I discovered that I couldn't make a specialist Worker.

You can have units that only have a specific worker ability. The only problem is the AI will most likely unable to use it

I have swordsman who can clear jungle, pioneer units that can build road, rails and mine and also modern infantry (an upgrade of infantry, mech inf have to be build from scratch ) able to clear pollution. In fact, most of my millitary units can build fort.

Never have the game crashed on me due to these modifications

Just keep in mind that if you do that sort of thing, you won't be able to automate that unit. The AI won't recognize the command and the unit will just sit there looking stupid. You'll have to do everything manually.
