  • Tech Rate in World Sizes menu

Simple question - what does te Tech Rate option do ?? The help pop-up is alittle vague.

I'm guessing that it effectively sets a cost for tech advances - the higher the rate the longer it takes to research a tech as the larger maps (with more cities) has a higher rate so it wouldn't make much sense if a larger map had a faster tech development rate now would it !!

I think I've answered my own question - anyone care to confirm/contradict ??

    Cheers
    Why me ?

    I think tech rate is a multiplier, percentage-wise (i.e. a tech rate of 100 is baseline, 80 is 80%, 200 is 200%).

Not sure how it interacts with tech costs... probably something to the effect of TECH COST * TECH RATE = Beakers needed... or somesuch.

I've used tech rates changes in my Giant Map Variations mod. Check it out at http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...threadid=40247.

Yep, you've got it. Since larger maps mean more cities, it's gets easier to research new techs. So the number is increased on larger maps in order to slow it down. I'm not exactly sure what the formula is they're using though.

          I believe the formula is:
Tech Cost (from the Advances section) * Tech Rate (from the World Sizes section) * % of civs that do not have the tech / 5

Isn't there also another figure to take into account for tech with the difficulty level?

No, as far as I know, difficulty level does not affect the cost of techs. Of course, it does affect your ability to come up the the gold to pay the cost.

Which in reality has the same affect.

Difficulty level doesn't directly affect the player's tech cost (IIRC), but it does affect the AI's, in exactly the same way that it affects the AI's shield cost for buildings, units, etc.
