Getting gold/trade/cities for peace treaty

I have seen reference from others in the forums regarding getting cities or other items in exchange for a peace treaty.

Whenever I offer a peace treaty, the only thing I can get is a peace treaty in return. All other options are greyed out. I am playing at Regent level, with version 1.16f.

Is there a way to get other items while suing for peace? Or are they referring to some sequence of diplomatic exchanges?

As soon as you offer the peace treaty, the other options become available and you can add them.
