  • How many people play with 8 Civs?

I am starting to play with 8 Civs after having no luck with 16, then went down to 10 and now am at 8. So far the turns seem really fast but I just started.

Anyone else play with 8? Are the turns fast even through the late game stages or is it because the number of cities as well.

I am on Marla's Huge map right now. Should I try a standard map? I will see for myself soon enough just wanted to know before hand to see if I should start a new game.

But with 8 Civs I have noticed a big decrease in turns.

    How about you guys?

I always play with 8 civs on a huge map, and it's smooth going until industrial era. Then the turns start getting longer.....and longer........and longer. By the 1500's, you might as well be playing with 16.

I'm going down to 7 on my next game.

I have played one game on a huge map with 8 civs and I didn't notice a real problem with it slowing down until the modern era. The whole world did declare war on the Persians though during the industrial era, and that was interesting since they were on a continent by themselves. There were a whole lot of caravels moving back and forth.

I hate how they limit you to a smaller number of Civ's on small maps. I would love to play 16 Civ's on a tiny map. That would really test your ability to negotiate for resources and wage war or hold peace. The bigger the map, the longer [and more boring] the game.

Well, if I recall correctly (never tried it ) you can change that in the editor - create a tiny, small (or whatever you prefer) map and set the number of players to 16...

I haven't given the editor a try yet but that's because I figure that the point of the editor is to let me create scenarios and fiddle with all the settings which is not what I want to do. I want to change certain rules of the game but not worry about everything and especially not see what the map looks like beforehand. I also want my changes to affect all my gameplaying from then on, not only a single map and have to do it all over again.

thats exactly what it does. it changes the rule in the game that limits how many civs you can have on smaller sized maps. it doesnt do anything else. it affects all gameplay from then on, i think even saved games. you wont ever have to do it all over again or load any settings. just leave it changed and enjoy
