Civ3 wont work under winXP?

I recently installed winXP and now i find that civ3 doesnt work anymore. I installed winxp, then did a clean install on civ3, patched it and it didnt work...
"Civilization3.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close...sorry"

I'm running XP and Civ3 with nary a problem.

what do you mean xp patches? something from microsoft?

I updated my nvidia drivers and sound card drivers 3 days ago.
Im not sure exactly what youre referring to.

One thing I can say that is that Windows XP isn't the real problem.
I run Win XP and I can play Civ3 easily with or without the patch.
You probably need to update some hardware/software in your pc.
Did you check your DirectX?
It's difficult to see from distance what the problem can be.

i reinstalled it from scratch and got it to work with the patch this time, but now theres no interface inside. theres no text or buttons, just background images.
