  • Post Apocalyptic Mod

As a big fan of Fallout, I have started work on a post-nuclear mod. The basic theme is that the world has been destroyed by a massive nuclear war, and you are in charge of one of the factions trying to rebuild civilization. Of course, each faction has their own ideas about how civilization should be rebuilt...

Right now the game design is about 85% complete and the mod itself is around 45% complete, maybe less considering the artwork I want to add.

Anyway, I thought I would get an idea of what people want to see in a post apocalyptic mod. The poll question relates to maps: would you prefer a "Fallout style" map (covering mainly California, extending east just past the rockies), a United States map, a North America map including Alaska and Central America, or the whole entire world. Chances are I will include the world map anyway (based on one of the many excellent world maps already available) in addition to the "main" map. And, of course, everyone is free to create their own maps for it.

Aside from maps, what ELSE do people want to see in a post-apocalyptic mod? While I do have a specific vision for the mod, I am making it for you guys and not myself, so if anyone has a suggestion for a unit, technology, improvement, wonder, game concept, or whatever else, please post it here. If I incorperate your suggestion you will be given credit in the final mod, of course. Please post your thoughts.

    cool idea

Cool idea, game restrictions will make it a little hard to do it proper, but here are some thoughts.

changing resources to represent 'salvage posts' (wrecked cities/industrial sites)

change the jungle graphic to a ruined state, and have all pollution effects change landscape to this new jungle square, (can be cleared back into grassland)

add pollution modifiers to nearly all 'ancient' buildings (representing the fact everything scavenged is bulloxed up from the nukes) letting better non polluting buildings replace these by the 'industrial or middle age'

along with this have high powered troopies (high attack) low hit points (lower conscript and regular) nix barracks until when the rebuilding starts so at the beginning of the game you got BIG MOJO firepower with sickly units (again representing the basic health of the survivors who are eating old spam and rats)

Then with the middle ages allow barracks but these high powered units to evolve into more reasonable units (lower attacks) (and double/triple the vetran hit points/defense ratings on these units) (again the metaphore goes that a well fed and organized bunch of guys with bows and the ability to use them is going to whup a bunch of underfed, molting skinned, eye sight damaged, skeletons with aging automatic weapons.

This would allow an interesting arc going from deadly but soon-to-be-dead units against weaker but healthier units.

The first tech of the middle/industrial age (depending on how cruel you want to be) allow the 'sanitation' tag so folks don't croak in jungles (the ruins)

    Other tech ideas could be

food/land decontamination: allowing irragation by workers
database recovery: ala libraries w/ +50% tech
animal breeding: allowing both horse units and a 'barn' instead of a grainery

basic construction: allowing wells(aqueduct), walls, mebbe new churchs to be built from native materials rather than scavenge (no pollution effect)

    then mebbe 'treasure troves' like
Treasure Trove --movies: allowing a + instead of a temple (since folks will take thier old god with them through the chaos)
Treasure Trove --sci fi books horde again + (I can live through nuclear winter if I have Hienlien and Pratchett)

maybe even in the script text change the wordings from 'you have built a library (or however it reads) to 'you have discovered a *blank* dunno if it is piece by piece in the script or a catch all, I haven't looked yet.

you could throw in a couple of government types from

Warlord (warlady? dunno the PC here) Hold
Utopians (good civ beni's sucky military)
Co-Op-archy(?) I like the idea of a bunch of condo yuppies organizing a government, or wait that would be like life)

Like I said it's a good idea, the limitations are many, less if you build the maps yourself and just cover the world with ruins and highways (pieces of railroad)
Lots of barbarian camps with special barbarian units could add to the spice.

good luck with the idea, lemme know if I get a credit, I can put it on my resume *G*

Very good ideas, many similar to ones I'd already thought of. I like the idea of the jungle tile. Right now I am using mucho goody huts to represent the destroyed cities, so exploration and "salvage" is a big part of the early game. Lots of leftover roads and railroads, and TONS of pollution. I already redid the pollution graphic to be green and less obtrusive, and the goody huts are redone to look like wrecked cities. The early game is very dangerous and chaotic, since you have good, cheap, high-attack units but no good defenders, and there are hordes of really powerful barbarians. I like your idea about reducing HP as well and will probably try to incorperate it. At the moment I have a very serious crash bug that may be due to how I've set up the civilizations, so it's hard to playtest =).

      Keep the ideas flowing people!
