  • Problem getting renamed civilization to work

I have been trying to configure a new civilization (Ottoman Turks) and I have encountered a problem. Here is what I have done:

    1. Launch Civ3Edit.
    2. Click on Tools.
    3. Click on “Use Default Rules” so that the checkmark is no longer there.
    4. Click OK on the cautionary window that appears.
    5. Click on the Edit button so that the Edit Civilization 3 Rules dialog box appears.
    6. Click on the Civilization tab.
    7. Rename the Zululand civilization and make other changes as desired.
    8. Click on the Close button.
    9. Click on File.
    10. Click on “Save As.”
    11. Give the file a name and save it in the Civilization folder.
    12. Launch Civ3.
    13. Load the scenario that I just created.
    14. Select all desired options at the beginning of the game.
    15. The game window appears.
    16. Soon after a Program error window appears with the message, ”Civilization3.e.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being generated.” There is one button (OK) in the window.
    17. Click the OK button.

    Here are my system specs:

    OS Microsoft Windows 2000 Pro
    Version 5.0.2195 Service Pack 2 Build 2195
    Manufacturer Dell Computer Corporation
    Model OptiPlex GX1 450MTbr+
    Total Physical Mem. 261,688 KB
    Available PhysIcal Mem. 102,192 KB
    Total Virtual Mem. 698,956 KB
    Available Virtual Mem. 390,464 KB
    Page File Space 437,268 KB

    What am I doing wrong.

Did you change the Civilopedia Entry?

No I haven't. I'll try that and let you know.

I've done the same thing, but I didn't get any errors. However, I had the program generate the map for me, and when I loaded the program, I choose to start the game (not let the program remake the map), and my civ that I map was right there.
I drink to one other, and may that other be he, to drink to another, and may that other be me!

No, don't try that. You shall not do that (unless you want to edit all text files as well) It makes the game to crash.

            Gramphos,

I did try editing the Civilopedia Entry from RACE_IROQUOIS (instead of Zululand last time) to RACE_OTTOMAN_TURKS and it worked; there were no errors.

I read your second post and put RACE_IROQUOIS back in the Civilopedia Entry and I encountered the same error that I had encountered before.

What exactly would be wrong if I have RACE_OTTOMAN_TURKS in the Civilopedia Entry?

If you open civilopedia.txt and seach for RACE_IROQUOIS, and copies all of them to RACE_OTTOMAN_TURKS.

Then do the same with pediaicons.txt.

Make sure to backup the original files.

If this doesn't work I have no idea what the game does. Then you could try to do the same pre patch, and see if there is a patch problem. (I've never run into without (but I haven't tried it after the patch.))

Works with new Civs or not?

I've seen a few different threads about this and I'm getting the same error so I'm confused. Does this only work if I change the name of one of the existing 16 Civs or can I add a new one? I added Celts, civilopedia entry RACE_CELTIC in the pediaicons.txt and civilopedia.txt, and copied all of the info for the Americans under those headings because I had no way to create unique .flc files, etc. Anyway, I didn't put too much creative time into it yet, I just wanted to get the framework correct. I believe I did everything else correctly in the Civ3Edit but I'm happy to post the .bic if that helps.

So I get the error and in another post I saw that the .exe file may be the problem, but in different posts I see people saying they have 25-31 civs ( plus one for barbarian ) ... so were they mistaken and hadn't played with the new civs, or am I still doing something wrong?

                  Thanks,

                  Hank
