What is the difference between difficulty levels?

I cant find a thread that realates to this. I want to play where all the computer players and myself are at the same level. no modifers what so ever.

I tried monarchy and the computer kicked my ass in building wonders of the world. Then i wen one level down and now I kick ass.

Can anyone help me?

Regent is the difficulty level that is supposed to be an even match. The editor will show you several factors that change with difficulty (such as additional AI units, AI cost adjustments, etc.). To view them, open the editor, uncheck "Use default rules" in the tools menu, then choose edit rules and go the the difficulty tab.
