Huzzah! I am the founder of the Whohangs/Codemaster fanclub! The key to the situation was turning off compatability mode before grabbing the patch. Now it runs without using the compatability mode.

I'd like to be member #2! This system works - now I have a working, patched game. And joy filled the land...
