Ok, I was having a LOT of freeze ups with Civ3. Sometimes it would work ok for a while, sometimes it would lock up every 5 minutes requiring a full computer reboot. I was running Win98SE, the latest Detonator drivers from nVidia, and DirectX 8.0a.
Well, just last night I downloaded the DirectX 8.1 update from Microsoft, and I played for about 4 hours today with no freeze-ups or other problems.
Ok, so I can't quite tell if I've lucked out again and just hit a good streak, but I was TRYING to crash it like what has happened before (clicking OK on dialogs before the sound effect was finished, etc). I can't garuntee that it will work, but it seems worth a try.
