Getting Leaders

It seems like there is no possibility for a unit to become a Leader after winning against Barbarians. In the beginning of the game I explore a lot (well, everyone does) with my Warriors. Many of them become Elite after winning battles against Barbarians, but none of them ever made it to a Great Leader.....
Is it rules or am I plain unlucky?

there isn't any set rule which desribes this, but I'm 99.9% sure that you can't get a GL from fights with barbarians, only against other civs.

It makes sense really. You could simply park a few elite units near barbarian huts and fight until you get a GL. Barbarians are rather easy to beat too... Also there is supposedly a bonus to fighting barbarians, according to some on these forums, but I haven't been able to find such a modifier in the editor though.
