  • If you think that playing Civ3 is a slog...

... help me playtest a custom rule set.

After slogging through a couple of games with the default rule set, I thought I'd look for ways to pick up the pace and increase the fun factor without deviating too far from Civ3's basic game design. So I created a custom rule set which corrects anomalies and adjusts some of the game models.

Wanna playtest these rules and give me feedback?

    Changes in this rule set:

    - Corruption and Strategic Resource models are tweaked. Walls, Marketplaces, and Police Stations reduce corruption (along with Courthouses). Production cost for Courthouses is reduced to 40 shields, all civs get the military discount for Walls. Iron, coal, and oil occur in equal quantities; uranium is increased 20%.

    - Gaps in the upgrade path are filled. This means that default units appear in the production menu along with special units, so watch your governors and make sure that they build the units you want. (It's a bit of a kludge, but it's the only way to fix the problem in this version of the game.)

    - Subs can be upgraded to Nuclear Subs; Destroyers can be upgraded to AEGIS Cruisers.

    - Helicopters transport two foot units, like the Civilopedia says, including Mech Infantry (but not armor).

    - All ground units can be airlifted, including Workers and Settlers.

    - Zone-of-control rules are consistent. All mounted units have ZOCs, as do modern ground units with 2 or more movement points. (Marines, Paratroopers, Radar Artillery, and AEGIS Cruisers have zones of control as in the default rules.)

    - AEGIS Cruisers can carry tactical nukes.

    - Privateers are beefed up slightly.

    - Nuclear Plants decrease pollution, like the Civilopedia says, and their cost increases accordingly.

    - No food-production penalty during Anarchy.

    - Team colors are different in some cases, and the occurrence of that awful lime green is minimized.

To download the new rule set, click here and save the file to your Civilization III folder and unzip it. Move the existing civ3mod.bic file to a safe location so you can restore default rules later on, then rename "civ3mod.acol.bic" to "civ3mod.bic".

If you accidently clobber your default rules file, you can recover it by renaming "civ3mod.107f.bic" to "civ3mod.bic".

WARNING: After you install the new rule set, it will affect your games in progress. If you load a saved game, the new rules apply to the next turn. Exception: the Strategic Resource model changes only when you generate a new map.

After these rules are playtested, I'll create a modified version of the Civilopedia to go with them. Watch this thread for an announcement.

(I don't think so, since I didn't post any files to Apolyton's server. The rules file is owned by my website.)
