If I get a good unit, i.e. musketter, I can build it for a while then it's no longer on the list.

That should NOT happen. You either ran out of saltpeter (which is completely random, nothing to do with how many muskies you built) or something your road was destroyed or something.

Double check if your road to your capital is still intact and whether you can build muskies in the rest of your cities.

Already lost the game, I think that started happening when 5 other Civs ganged up on me and pillaged my resources. yes thanks
