JBW, does India have the tech that allows them to see coal? If not, it won't show up on their diplomacy screen even as coal(0).

yeah I played a game where one nation had the ONLY supply of saltpeter in existence. So you know I just HAD to go and wipe them out. Worst I've gotten is there being about 9 billion deposits of coal and iron, and one oil, saltpeter, and rubber on the ENTIRETY of the map. And don't get me started on uranium, I had one map where it was found only way up north in a civ that was still in the middle of the industrial age. The Panzers took care of that really fast.

No resource at all. Hmm, Does this make the game buggy or more interesting? I think the latter.

Resources only on one continent I have seen.
I've also noticed resources drying up, and bloody quickly too.
I think that in the Chieftain game I'm playing (trying to adapt to Civ III rules), I've lost 2 iron, 2 salpeter and 2 coal. The salpeter thing was annoying because the greeks had just build a city next to 2 i was using, so those were lost to me as well.
The Greeks don't exist anymore though.
Stange that as well. Two cities and when I told a hoplite to leave my land or declare war ... they declared war! Oh well, their funeral.

BTW Are resources ever found? You know: the city of [blank] has just discoverd [oil]. Huzzah!

Yes, there could be new resources found!
Every turn when you have your citizens working on some square within city radius they stand a little chance of discovering a new resource on that square. Dunno if it applies to luxuries and bonus resources as well, in my experience I only had a new source of iron found once.

I had exactly the same problem - playing as one of 16 nations on a huge map, I discovered Steam Power only to find not a single coal square on the whole world map: pretty annoying as I'd just generated an extra ten or so workers to cope with the railroad-building.

Eventually though, ten or twenty turns later, without warning, I suddenly noticed coal near one of my cities, on an unmined hill - further scouting around revealed three or four coal squares.

So yes there was coal - but not until well after I discovered steam power, and also completely unannounced.

Maybe coal is never found before a certain date ? Perhaps if you discover Steam Power too early you just have to wait ? (mind you, I was in the 1800s)

On more than one occassion I've exhausted a supply of Oil only to have it replaced with another in the very same turn!

                Definitely not!
Recently I discovered steam power in the 17th century and immediately found coal.

Resource disappearance has nothing to do with whether the resource is "used up;" it's just random. Hypothetically, it's possible for the coal, heretofore invisible, to disappear before you even discover Steam Power!

                    No aluminum!!!!

This sucks!!! There's no aluminum anywhere on the planet! No advanced planes, no modern armor!! I was playing a military game for the first time (having disabled all the other win options) and now I can't build any good stuff. The game AI should be smart enough to always create at least one of each resource.
