different screen resolution?

I'm very annoyed that Civ3 requires 1024x768x16-bit color. I want to be able to play it on my laptop, but the laptop only does up to 800x600. Anything bigger is displayed, but the overflow is just left off the screen, which makes Civ3 unplayable.

Is there any way at all to change the screen resolution for Civ3?

SMAC(X) worked just fine in this respect...
