  • 2 Research Questions

On the turn you complete a civilization advance, are any excess research points carried over to the next advance or are they simply lost?

And secondly, if I'm researching an advance and then later acquire it from the AI, are those points lost or are they credited to the next advance?

    Thanks!

If you acquire from the AI the advance you are currently researching, you lose the research points you have invested so far. I may be paranoid, but it seems to me that the AI likes to wait until I've nearly finished researching an advance and then call me and offer to trade it to me.

As far as I can tell, you also lose all your research points if you change the advaance you are researching.

I haven't checked to see if spare research points are carried forward when you complete an advance, but I suspect not.

It has been my experience that "surplus" research points are not carried forward, under any circumstances. This includes: completing a tech, gaining a tech from another civ, and gaining a tech from a goody hut.

I do believe, however, that accumulated research points carried over when I switched tech research--but I could be remembering incorrectly on that.

Also, "surplus" production shields don't seem to carry over either.

Perhaps both of these are part of Firaxis' efforts to reduce micromanagement. For myself, it seems counterproductive. If I choose to micromanage, there should be both the opportunity and the benefit. As it is now, I no longer have the choice.
