  • Luxury Resources: how do they work?

    Hi ppl,

OK, I understand how you connect a luxury resource to your capital with roads (plus a colony if it's outside your borders) and it makes one citizen per city happy.

But what happens when you have several luxury resources? For example, if I have 2 sources of furs, do I still get only one happy face? Waht if I have 10?

And how does a marketplace affect this? The Civilopedia says that it increases the number of happy faces by 1 for the 1st and 2nd luxury, by 2 for the 3rd and 4th, etc... But what does it mean by th e"1st", "2nd", etc? Does it mean the 1st and 2nd instances of each luxury? Or the 1st and 2nd different type of luxury I have? Or the 1st and secong source period?

Right now I have 4 sources (though one is traded to the English)of furs and 1 of gems, and I can see no difference between cities with a marketplace and cities without one...

Please help me out here if you've already figured this one out....

    Hey Mengo,

When it comes to happy faces in your own empire you only need 1 luxury resource of a kind to add benefits.

Thus if you have 1 ivory, you'll make one content face happy per city.
If you have 8 ivory, you'll make one content face happy per city. The rest can be traded to other nations who don't have the luxury.

Now, if you have a marketplace, the this happens :
Your first two kinds of luxury (e.g. ivory and dyes) will each make one happy face.
The 3rd and 4th kinds of luxury (e.g. silk and gems) will each make 2 happy faces.
    The 5th and 6th each 3.
And if you manage to obtain all 8 kinds the 7th and 8th will take care of 4 happy faces each.

In short, a city without a marketplace that has access to all luxuries will make 8 happy faces.
A city with marketplace will make 20 happy faces (1+1+2+2+3+3+4+4).

    Hope this helps!

Thanks for the confirmation Strat.. I was finally able to trade a fur for an ivory and saw the two happy faces for the third type of luxury on my city screens. What's kind of misleading is the fact that on the city screen it tells you how many of each resource type you have, when that has no relevance at all as far as happiness goes...

Ahhh.... I finally understand. I was wondering why some of my cities had many more happy faces then others.
