  • Can you increase the resolution above 1024x768?

Now I have quite a big monitor that can support high resolutions and going above this resolution isn't a problem. Now I always thought it was possible to select a higher resolution but I haven't seen any way to do it. The UI should be able to support it no problem due to the nature of the layout. So is there a way to do it?

Not that I can tell, though I sure would like to do it. On my LCD, 1024x768 is two steps low, so I either play in near-mode (a bit blurry) or in true-mode (with a thick border around the edge of the screen).

I recall reading something in the readme about focing the resolution to different settings. Am at work right now, so can't give you the specifics, but check the readme file...

The videomode thing doesn't seem to work (well for me) but the keepres=1 does. My normal setting is 1280x960 and it works well. I don't know if the game would work if your desktop is 1600 - might be worth trying.

Yeah, I found this in the readme:
Ini file tweaks: The first time Civilization III is run, it will create a file called 'civilization3.ini'. The following lines can be added and allow you to tweak the game:

*KeepRes=1 - When set to 1, your desktop resolution will be what the game uses. 1024x768 screens will be centered, but you will be able to see much more of the map on one screen.
          *NoSound=1 - Disables all sound in-game.
*Video Mode=1792 / Video Mode=1600 / Video Mode=1280 / Video Mode=1152 - Force screen resolution to one of these settings.

          does that help you out?

            Sweet!

Thanks Hugo, I been looking for this kind of info for the last 5 days... Can't wait to go home and try it out!

Guess I should give that readme file a serious look-see

I can confirm that setting "Video Mode=1600" to the end of my .ini file doesn't work. But the "Keepres=1" worked. Thanks Hugo, this was on of my big issues with the game.

no problem, it is a weird roundabout way to change the resolution though.

The readme is handy, alot of stuff from the manual was changed by the time of release and its all documented in the readme (ie civs abilities, precision bombing, new hotkeys, etc)
