when I try to move my unit to a spot which will take them 10 turns (let say) to get to, they only make the first move, and then just stop there w/o going any further? what's the problem?

no, there is not enemy units around.
plus, I uncheck 'cancel order when next to enemy combat unit' in perference.==========================
