  • What am I doing wrong?

I'm trying to change the French unique unit from the musketeer to a worker with 2 movement. It works, kind of... I can start up a new game, found my first city, and the new unit shows up able to be built... then game crashes at the start of the second turn, right before the Science Advisor pops up

I have added an Art/Units/Pioneer folder and .ini (copied the Worker folder and renamed it), so I don't think that's a problem.

Anyone able to shed some light on this?

For reference, running a brand-new 1.4 Ghz P4 WinXP, GeForce 2 (with the older drivers so I can scroll), although I don't think it's a computer problem.

    This may be something else...

It seems to be fairly common that any change at all to the rules totally destroys the tech tree; not sure why. I have yet to successfully load *ANY* scenario with altered rules, no matter what changes were made, and have the tech tree work.

I had similar problems in Civ2... it happened when I accidentally connected techs recursively.... philosophy demanding a tech that can't be reached without philosophy, you get the idea... it tok weeks until I found out why the game only crashes when the science adviser pops up...

You need to overwrite the civ3mod.bic file in the Civilization III folder. Make a back-up copy of the original, and when you go to save your edited rules, overwrite civ3mod.bic.

Then when you start up the game, don't load the changed .bic file as a scenario, as this file is where CivIII looks for the default rules.

That's what I'm doing. And the problem's not with the tech tree being unusable, as in the funky arrows and I can't click anything - I get that when I load it as a scenario. The problem is, i create a new game normally, no scenario, pick the french, go through all that jazz, I'm on the world map with my settler and worker, found my first city, move the worker, end the turn, wait a second for it to process AI, boom, game crashes. It also does this if I edit either the starting culture group (European, Asian, etc.), or the color (from pink to white in this case, and yes, I changed the barbarians to a different color first).

I can't find the thread at the moment, but I seem to recall someone else saying that changing colors causes the crash you are talking about. Have you tried doing this but leaving the colors alone?

If you could, zip up and send me a copy of your BIC file, plus the INI file (nothing else -- not the graphics) of the unit you created to webmaster@firaxis.com.

              Thanks,
