Upgrading Armies

I have been a very peaceful democracy since the great Zulu war of antiquity, but now the cursed Egyptians have declared war. I am building riflemen and cannon, but they only army I have is one pikeman and two longbowmen. Is there any way to upgrade the constituents?

No, I don't believe units in armies can be upgraded.

The best you can do is disband the army and reap a partial harvest of used shields.
