Intel 82810 Graphics Controller card errors

Well, reading a few threads, it appears that a few people with the same card as the computer I'm at have the same problem:

I've made sure DirectX is updated, graphics drivers are updated, I've lowered the number of fonts to about 70 on the whole computer and I'm running the computer at 1024 resolution

The font problem shown in other threads is present. The game loads the movie properly. The New Game option is clicked. The world parameters are chosen (doesn't matter which)... when clicking on the bottom right circle, an error screen is shown:

Civilization 3 has caused an error in
CIVILIZATION3.EXE
Civilization will now close

If you continue to experience problems,
try restarting your computer

Restarting doesn't help

The computer specs are:
HP Pavilion 6830
Celeron 700
64 MB SDRAM
Windows ME
Intel 82810 Graphics Controller

I hate HP computers

I have the font problem on my eMachines etower 633ids (633 MHz Celeron, i82810 chipset, 128MB). Adjusting the font size in the INI makes the font smaller, but the line spacing stays the same, so I can't get all the text on many Civilopedia screens or the Diplomacy screen!

Repros on WinME and WinXP. May be a DirectX issue, but I haven't encountered it in any other games. Could it be a custom font with the problem?
