  • New specialist: The Lumberjack

I had always thought about changing the amount of resources you get for clearing forests in SMAC, but just never bothered with it.

One of the reasons I have wanted to implement an increased amount of aqcuired shields from this action is because forestry and deforestation has played such a large role in our history.

What I have done is change the number of shields from 10 to 28 for clearing forests. The way I came up with the number 28 is like this:

Typically, a citizen working a forest square contributes 2 shields per turn to the local city. Clearing forest take 10 turns, and replanting them takes 18 for a total 'forest recycling' time of 28 turns. Now, for a standard worker, that adds up to about 1 shield per turn if he keeps planting and tearing down a forest. But for the industrious civs, and for the players who have researched Replaceable Parts, the average per-turn acquisiton of shields from this process is 2.

Now in truth, a worker's time would be better spent just being reabsorbed into a city and working a forest tile, raking in not only the 2 shields every turn, but 1 food and, with a road, 1 commerce (plus any bonuses). Also, the worker unit costs 1 point of support. But the upside is that the shields gotten this way are not subject to corruption.

So what is the point, you ask? Well, like I said, this process not only helps with quick, and realistic/fun, boosts of production, but it in essence makes a lone worker able to become a 'shield producing specialist'. Put him outside of a fully worked city to squeeze another 2 shields per turn (or more if you are Industrious AND know Replaceable Parts).

You have to be careful though, as excess shields from foresting are lost if they exceed the total cost for the current build project.
[I haven't checked to see what effect it has on 'Wealth' either.]

    -edit-

28 is too much. The reason is because of the Industrious civs and thier bonuses. I am going to drop it down to 20.
