Good, then I may be able to find out what makes that section variable length. There might still be some errors with the Export/Import/Remove map functions.

          • I know this sounds stupid but...

How do I use this? I have not downloaded any other versions, and I have no idea what to do in this program. A readme-type document would help

Not intend, I did: changed some recource fields by editor, started the game with that map, saved after 1st turn, took your tool, correct all starting positions, saved it under new name, exit, start the game then.

And again now I got at 1370:

It's terrible, but this happens with all maps I try, except the original huge map if I don't change the starting points.
Within the past week I only had one game that I could finish, and that with the originalmap was. All other I started this problem have somewhere between 1250 and 1400

It happens always between 1250 and 1400, always still being in 2nd research table, nearby the end of it (one or 2 turns before I get the last target of the 2nd table), 16 races, I'm playing German.

With that map it needs around 15-18 hrs to play to reach it.

Reboot or something elase doesn't change anything if I take the autosav file of the turn before. So it's always able to reproduce.

I've no idea what there happens, what the program is doing just then.

                • Win98, all civ3 files original, except some pcx for terrain.
I took the latest autosav, made all my moves and saved it (can't here attach, zip is 527kb, give me an email that I can send it to you)
                  Then happens (end year 1385):
                  - wait
                  - movement of greek units
                  - wait
                  - Zulu area shown, no movements shown, after around 10 sec

                  • Maybe a hint to the problem's reason:
I called your latest Civ3CopyTool and then in it your integrated SaveGameModifier, then I tried to load that sav file in, and got this error message:

CIV3COPYTOOL verursachte einen Fehler durch eine ungültige Seite

So this your tool also a problem has with that sav, but now you should be ably to analyse what your program doesn't like with that file. (I hope)

The bad joke is: I made some separate saved time ago with that game.
                    At 4000 BC, 3950 BC, 900 BC, 850 AD, 1120 AD, 1380 AD, 1385 AD.
Those 3 files being BC I can load, those being AD I all cannot load but get the same error message.
I'll now start with the 900 BC file againand make a ave just before 0 BC and then every turn after. Then we'll se what happens when with the file after 900 BC and before 850 AD (and that I believe then at last the reason is why the program exits the game somewhere around 1350, that there something is that is comulating)

I maybe will write one, but not now. I have a book to read before tomorrow.

                        Brief:
The tool consists of two tools that uses the same functions, and therefore are in the same EXE.
One tool is the original CopyTool, and the other is the newly added SaveGame editor.
To start the CopyTool you just have to run the exe.

To start the SaveGame editor you can either start the copy tool and use the menu to start the SaveGame editor, or you can start the exe passing the parameter /sge to the EXE. That will start the SaveGame editor without reading all the files that the CopyTool reads at startup and is therefor faster.

In the CopyTool you can load a BIC and select to copy structures of it. It is nothing that can be guaranteed to work with the game, but some things can be copied and is easy to get to work. See Plutarck's Tutorial for more info on what has been successfully added.

To edit a savegame You select load from the File manu in the SaveGame editor, and the tool will load the SAV and present the editable info. Change anything and save the file (new name is recommended, as something might go wrong). To easier find a unit to change the filter-menu can be used.

Finally I'll say now, so that none complains later, that this tool work with the original version of SAVs and BICs, and after the patch is released I'll try to get a working version as fast as possible, but some features might be disabled until I get them to work. (So edit everything that you want to edit and can edit now before the patch)

no, that a wrong suspect was. Seems that no relation is between both problems.

I played the game new up from the last running sav year 900 BC and saved *all* years.
At last today I reached 130 AC, and it crashed again, althought C3T could open all files (not like yesterday where C3T couldn't open all)

I sent you a zip with the 1385 and 1390 sav file.

What I detected (not knowing if it may be important):
                          file size of sav
                          1000 - 7.199 KB
                          1385 - 8.017 KB
                          1390 - 8.043 KB

this sav the the SaveGameEditor of Civ3CopyTool can load it.

                          -
                          In 1385 I got Newton's university
                          I moved some units only
                          saved game as usual
                          enter (to continue)
-- then (1390) AI is working:
                          movements of greek units
wait (very long, as usual in this game)
                          movements of some russian units
crash, no longer wait before the crash after the last russian unit moving

very unprobably, as *all* other new games existing work fine.
I'm not a programmer, so I can't say to what that crash messages refers to.

But meanwhile, after I compared all, I suspect an other problem, and if I'm right then it's a real bug in program (this one of those reading this here may confirm/test): Allways it happens after the sav file got a size of more than 8043 KB, and that would explain why that doesn't happen with the original map as with that you never come to such a sav size.

If you read in newsgroups you'll find an other guy who reports the same problem.
