I guess this is the place to check-in on to see how buggy the game is before parting with my cash. It will be Americo-centric for a while aswell...
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.

        Great Tunes - No Game

Intro video runs fine, then screen goes black and
music plays. Cannot get back to Windows - I have blindly
hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and ALT-S and it restarts the system.

Have tried the 640*480 256 colors start to no avail.
Have started at 1024*768 16 colors and put KeepRes=1
into ini file - still have the same problem.
Tried the Video Mode=1024 line in the ini file,
        still can't get it started.

Admittedly the video card far outclasses the monitor
in resolutions and refresh rates. However, if I knew
how CivIII registers the resolution and refresh rate
I could get it to use the correct one for the monitor.

Have Norton Utilities and DirectCD shut down.

Decline the opportunity to tinker with my registry.

PLEASE HELP - $ 50.00 worth of intro screen is not
        my idea of a game!!!!

If you irrigate grasslands while having a despotic government you still only get 2 food. You need a better gov to get more.

              Can't Speed Up Scientific Research

Adjusting the percentage of income I devote to scientific research does NOT change the number of turns required to obtain a new Civilization Advance. For example, let's say that my science advisor tells me that it will take 16 turns to obtain Bronze Working. OK. So now I would like to reduce the number of turns. In order to do that in Civilization I and II, all I had to do was to devote more funds to scientific research. So I move the Civ3 scientific research slider to 100 percent, devoting all of my net income to science. BUT nothing happens. The "16 turns" remains "16 turns." So I move the slider to 10 percent. No change. The "16 turns" remains "16 turns." There is a change only when I move the slider to ZERO percent. Then the "16 turns" becomes "- turns" (i.e., never), which is correct.

Adjusting the science slider DOES, however, change the amount of cash that will be put into my treasury. Say that I am earning a net 10 coins per turn. If I move the slider so as to devote 10 percent of that to science, the income window shows me that 9 coins will be added to my cash surplus (the treasury). If I move the slider so as to devote 100 percent of that to science, the income window shows me that no coins will be added to my cash surplus.

I don't understand why moving the slider affects only the percentage of cash but not the speed of scientific research. It should affect both at the same time.

So my problem is that the game does not allow me to speed up my scientific research, no matter what I do.

Is this a bug in the game?

FYI, this is my first game of Civ3, and I'm still in the Ancient Age.

I would appreciate any help you could give me. Thank you.

Not to sound cryptic, or zen, but it does and it doesn't. There are times when increasing or decreasing the amount spent on research changes the time and other times it doesn't. I haven't figured out why, except that there is some cost thing I'm missing.

I basically consider it under the same effect I always do. Apply the minimum amount that gives me the best results. If I can have the same speed of research and put 9 intead of 3 in the treasury, I do it. On a later turn, if increasing the amount spent does decrease the time, I will adjust it unless I have something else I need the cash for.

As best I understand it so far, if you are working in the Ancient Age, you only have so much to devote to research. So, moving your slider bar doesn't get you much difference.

As you progress in the game, it will make a difference. You'll notice more and more the further along you get.

                    Hope that helps!

If you go to the Files area, you'll find a thread for the Civ3CopyTool. It will allow to you to copy existing Wonders/units etc. which you can later edit with the Editor that comes with the game. Be sure to get the latest version (there's a new one coming soon), since Gramphos, the author, has made a great deal of changes to it recently. This is pretty much all you'll need.

There is also, in the files area, a program called the Hacked Editor. It's exactly the same as the normal editor except that is has Add/Delete buttons which have been disabled in the regular version. The hacked editor however was made from the pre-patch editor so it doesn't have some of the features the new one does.
