  • GL mechanics question

So, I guess I'm only about 10 years late stumbling on to this forum. Sigh. I dusted off my old copy of C3C a few months back and have played a few games. I think I'm getting back into it and seem to be doing fairly well on my latest game. This place has been very helpful.

My question about the Great Library: does it only work for civs that you are in contact with or for all other civs? I built the GL in my current game but got NO techs out of it before I got education.

    Background:
Playing with 4 other civs, but was in contact with only two of them when GL was active. The Chinese were quite backward and, to be kind, they were in a tough situation - sandwiched between me and the Portugese sharing the continent with him. So the Chinese never really had anything I didn't anyway. The Ports were ahead in some things though so my hope was that between them and one of the other as yet un-contacted civs, I might get a tech or two out of the GL.
No such luck. I got nothing out of the GL, hence my question above.

You have to have contact with two nations that have a tech you do not already know. If they learn it on the IBT, you will get it next turn. Once you have learned Education, the GLB is obsolete. So you want to get as many contacts as soon as you can. Basically the GLB is not worth building on lower levels or in games with few nations.
