Increasing city size to metropolis

how do you increase city size beyond 12? do you need any improvements or research?

You need to build a hospital, which comes when you research sanitation.

In addition to hospitals, you have Shakespears wonder in Conquest. It acts as a free hospital. You will need to be able to generate 2 food for all pop, so 13 citizens need 26 food.

Also, if you build enough hospitals, (IIRC it's 5) you will be able to build the small wonder "Field Hospital" so your units can heal while in enemy territory.

Sorry for the double posts! Under the addage: Be careful what you wish for---Cities with a population>12 start polluting and you will need several workers on stand by to clean up the mess.

It is called Battlefield Medicine. It requires 5 hospitals. In C3C you do not need it to heal armies in others land. It is needed to heal individual units.
