  • computer nations win research race

After a long time i tried again to peacefully win the research race and lost even on the warlord level.
what a dumb beginner imust i be playing as greece against japan,china,rome,persia,babylon-. only big library gave me some air. then the persian and babylonians negotiated among each other and never with me - soon having a lead in research and wonders (around 1400 AD) .
even when trying to adhere to some strategic advisory papers i did not succeed - computer nations did not behave as described in those papers.
    QUESTIONS:
    A) any new patches to civ3 aleviating this problem?
    B) any new advisory papers out there?
    C) will civ4 function more or less the same way or different?
    D) will my win98 computer 500MHZ be definitely to small for civ4?
    thanks for any good tips

    the AI cheats in research?

in addition to my first post of today I can tell you:
in 1050 persia got education which due to the GL was also given to me.
they appearantly went on with astronomy
in 1070 i got invention and went on with gunpowder.
in 1170 the persians had not yet finished astronomy.
in 1180 they suddenly had astronomy AND gunpowder, the latter must have been cheated because neither japan nor china or babylon could have negotiated it since they did not have engineering and invention.
when trying to negotiate with babylon or persia my
engineering and invention never appeared in the list of technologies which could be subject to negotiating (WHY???)
    WHERE is my misunderstanding???
    thanks for help

      A) no patch after C3 - 1.29
      PTW -1.27
      C3C - 1.22

      B) not likely as the game if getting a little long in the tooth now that IV is out. There are plenty of threads that can help.
Look back about 18 months for some players playing Regent.

      C) It is fiffernt in many ways, but familar still.

      D) I am sure it would be tough, but after the 1.52 patch you may work. If you have a decent video card and 512MB of RAM.

The only thing that kills players is not making enough workers, in a timely fashion and using them well. This mainly means make sure that any citizen working a tile has at least a road and then a mine (irrigation in food bonus tiles).

Trying not to spread out with very wide spacing of towns.

Building temples and libs before they are need.

My other grip is I see no reson to make Cath and definetly no colosseums.

First no cheating was going on, so it is only a matter of trying to figure out the rules.

Astro requires Ed, that is all. You got ED from the Great Lib, that means at least to civs you knew had it.

Second do you have contact with all the civs in the game? If not one of the others could have the techs and traded them.

It is not clear what all the conditions were at that time. Japan and Babylon could have aquied any number of know techs in one turn. They could have gotten Eng and then gotten Invention.

When you say they did not appear I take that to mean on your list. If that is so, then only two conditons should cause that.
One is they already know those techs and the other is they are not in that age yet.

Note that if any scientific civs are in the game, they get a free tech when they enter any new age. It is not uncommon for two or three of them to roll out those first tier real fast.

If you are not sure how many civs are in the game, you can look at diplomacy screen to see how many unmets are listed (C3C only). Otherwise if the space is enabled use F10 to see.
