Some would say that this would be the wrong place to make this post, But I want to place this post where the people that know the game are hiding.
Im playing the atari version of Civilization III Complete
In my game, as in all the previous Civ. games, there has always been two separate parts to one move. In the first part of the move, I would be informed of any citys that have built a city improvement or wonder, and given the oportunity to change the build orders. This would happen in the form of a pop up. The second part of the move would be the unit moving portion of the move. In this part of the move any city that built a unit would simply start building another of the same unit..... This is how my game has always played; till now. That is to say that my citys no longer inform me as to there compleation of a city improvement or wonder; and then start to build what ever they wish. ( be it improvement, unit or wonder). In the movement stage of the move any city that has built a unit is no longer tied to building another of the same unit and will build what ever they wish.
I guess Im no longer the boss. My role in the game has been downsized. Im now a unit mover. imagin my consern when Im engulfed in a war, and my citys decide to send settlers off to the battle field.
Now at the start of each turn I must go into my domestic advisor, and try to catch the citys that have compleated something, and set them in the right direction. This is ok when the civ is small but as the city count increaces, this can become a donting task. I don't consider myself a micro manager but - In times of war, I do not - I repete NOT build units in citys without a barracks. ( unless extreme sercomestances) Most early defensive units take fewer shields than ofensive units. Therefore citys with a smaller production rate should build defence and citys with larger production rate should build offence. This is hard to keep controle of when you have no controle.
I could continue in this vain and spout many examples - but I must be boring to to tears.
The question is how or what changed my game in this way? And YES my game did change - I have checked my saved games, and played them. In the saved games Im informed when a city builds a temple, and given the oportunity to change its production.
I have checked my preferences; though I never changed them; and nothing is changed.
I have played multyplayer games (this is the way multyplayer plays) Could this have changed my Game. (Atari's way to correct a handycap is to call it an accset (cheap fix))
I also tryed to fix this problem by uninstalling and reinstalling the game. To no avail. I also found that the saved files don't disapear after this process.
I reviewed my saved files and found a game that might be my waterloo. In this game I did not like my starting position; so I started moving around looking for a suitable starting position. My scout was joyfully running about popping goody huts. This remarkable scout handed me many tec., much money, and 2 units. The two units found another ai civ enslaved the worker and pillaged all. The two units eventually found themselfvs next to the city. Now the units that you recieve from goodie huts are not worth much and only good against barbs: that is if the unit is on a mountain and the barb on grassland. So now I find myself at decision time. My original settler has found himself close to the third ai civ in a good starting possition with my enslaved worker not far behind.
Why I made the decision is probably based on elapsed time and no unit escorting my settler, becouse I recieved a lot of tec from my scout. To walk away now, from the first ai civ would be the best strat. becouse they are now cripled and will consintrate on war machine instead of groth, and I still have two alive units. When the ai civ appears at my door step ( the ai always knows where you are) I can engage them, then make peace. But that was not the way that I went : instead I hit the offending city and took it first hit. (wow)
Now I think that here inlays the problem. I did not have a capitol city yet. I have the game set on not respon ai.
Therefore this city became my capitol and the ofending civ vanished. My first settler made my second city. Somehow I got cought between being the human and being an ai.
As I recall this game was the first time that I encountered the problems that I can not return from.
If you made it this far please help me.
