  • Nukes: What are they good for? (good God)

    I just read in a thread in this forum something along the lines of "most sensible players dont build nukes." to some sort of extent. This ponders me. Why not? I mean, I probibly have to agree that by the time Nukes are available the game is either won or lost, and most of the 'sensible' or 'good' players would have already overrun the world, but still... the statement brings me to this question. Do you experts see any reason in constructing and using these weapons of mass destruction? Or are you normally potent enough to not bother? I have had few chances myself of using these powerful tools, so I have little expirence, but I would love to hear any feeback from the Apolyton community. Thanks!

      I seldom use them, but I have had to use them a few times. This is usually in either a game someone posted and was way behind or a conqust only sid game.

      Both for the same reasons. Invasions of a stronger civ is very hard and time consuming effort. When I find I can kill a lot of units with nukes and make it easier I will.

      Well only if the game does not have a lot longer to go, IOW I am goin to ended it with this civ. Otherwise you have that endless pain of global warming.

        What is the deal with Global Warming (in the game)? I mean, what exactly does it do?

          They are great for killing stacks. Nukes are really the one answer in the game to the SoD.

          Global Warming happens tile-by-tile randomly once pollution is high enough. Occasionally, a tile will devolve: grass changes to plains, plains changes to desert. However, it's only one tile at a time, so it's not nearly so damaging as the truly global warming that would happen in Civ2.

            Some are even helpful such as Tundra changing. It can be quite bad as I have had 15 to 20 tiles in a turn. At least in Civ2 you could terraform it back.

            Lost of grassland in a metro can lead to starving.

              So how many tiles per turn can change from global warming? (and is it random worldwide?)

                In some of the AU games, I have had to take down a massive KAI or two, and have tremendously enjoyed using nukes as part of the process.

                There are actually quite a few issues to consider: overkill to deal with the SMD; stack destruction, both on land and at sea; resource and transportation disruption; reprisals; etc.

                The greatest delight for man is to inflict defeat on his enemies, to drive them before him, to see those dear to them with their faces bathed in tears, to bestride their horses, to crush in his arms their daughters and wives.

                  I have used nukes to some degree of success on a HUGE AI's capital to disrupt trades for resources that they would need for the war that they are getting from others.

                    It's a game, why bother? Usually all AI players are pissed with me all the time, so I don't care if I bomb them to hell.

                      I build nukes as a deterrent to keep other civs from nuking me. That being said, I'm probably giving the AI too much credit. Does owning nukes actually deter AI civs from using theirs on you? I haven't played enough games up to the nuclear age to find out.

                        I can't swear to, but it seems to slow them down. IOW most of the time they won't use them on me, but they have a few times.

                        So I do not know if it was due to the nukes or my overall strength.

                          There was a "Nuke the river" strategy in Civ3, the reason behind which was the creation of floodplains in order to feed more citizens. This could make a difference in games milking for high score, especially in the centuries, when all opponents except one are eliminated and you don't have anything else to do until 2050.

                          I usually built a decent stock of nukes and even deployed them on nuke subs, not for strategic, but rather for roleplaying reasons. I never used them in regular wars, however. Only in games, where I went for the spaceship victory, I occasionally started nuclear wars 1-2 turns before launch, just for the kicks.

                          In CtP2 I beelined for nanites (or whatever their name was), and tried my best to get them, before any other Civ went nuclear, because I hated nukes.
