If you play on a 250 X 250, how many Civs should be max., so you do not have to wait 10 to 15 min. when you hit next turn?

Also if you do want to play with all 32 Civs, what should be the max size of a map, so you do not have to wait 15 min after hitting next turn?

I'm now playing with 26 civs and a 250 X 250 map and I do wait 10 or more min. between turns.

I don't generally play big maps, but isn't it more about the tons of units that bog it down? If I'm right, it shouldn't matter so much how many civs you have

Thats true, I've played on all the map sizes and when it comes down to UNIT COUNT, not civ count. You can have 8 civs on a huge map and if they all build units (which they will) it will be just as slow (and painful) as 20 civs.

does the map have lots of water? The more harbors you have the more time it takes to check trade routes for each new town or razed/abandoned one.

Otherwise try to eliminate a few civs early as you can to reduce the amount of wars and trade routes.

Your very welcome, I came across the same problem some months ago. (however now I just play multiplayer games between or with my best friend and I... anticipating Civ4) Happy Civing!
