I'll post a game save (if the file works with the attachment feature). I need help. BTW this game is being played using the AU mod so keep that in mind. My first full game using this mod.
I was determined to try to win a game starting on an island. But so far it's just not happening. I must have sacrificed 20 curraghs and galleys, but couldn't find any neighbors. I finally built my one and only wonder I managed to build this game- the great lighthouse, and met some neighbors. Too bad they were way ahead in tech and for the large part unwilling to trade with me except on the rare occurance I had a tech they didn't. I had no iron, the only resource I had was horses. I did meet another backwards nation- the Mongols. I conquered them with longbowman and spearman as defenders. The best units they had were swordsman and medieval infantry. There were a couple other backwards nations but they seemed to be too far away to drain more resources on more wars. The war with mongols I had to lower my research rate in order to rush some musketman to defend when my spearman were annhilated.
The problem is the Russians are really pulling away. I wasn't that far away in tech when I first met, but now they are clear in the modern age. When they got military tradition they conquered their entire continent with their UU. I finally managed to acquire espionage and have built intelligence agencey. And I did steal one tech (flight). But it's quite expensive. And I'm ashamed to say I had to reload. As I can only afford to use the immediate option for my spies. Will it be harder to steal subsequent techs. I was thinking of keeping my research rate at 0, and using the money to steal all the techs. I can do this faster than I can research. But it takes about 4 turns to save enough money to steal a tech. I'm not sure if I can catch up in time to build a spaceship (The russians already built the U.N.). And I'm not even sure if I can find aluminum and uranium.
What's really pathetic is this is only a regent level game. I was trying some games on more difficult map settings, and I wanted to see if I can win a game starting out on an isolated island. But that doesn't appear to be possible.
