  • Help me! Whats going on here

I'm am currently playing a game on warlord (I know kinda low on the difficulty level but I'm fairly new to Civ3)
throughout the game i've managed to pull way ahead in tech, military and culture while playing as the americans but I've run into some major issues with foreign countries. The issue being they will not stop declaring war on me! First it was the spanish I captured their capital with a coalition of every other nation in the game I waited the 20 turns and declared a peace treaty with the spanish. Soon after diplomatic relations fell apart with the other foreign countries they all became annoyed with me (as apposed to polite which is what I had through most of the game) soon after the French which I had many trade deals going with and good relations declared war on me! Whats going on? It doesn't make any sense seeing as we were getting along and their military was substancally weaker than mine. Can anybody explain to me why this is happening and if I can expect more sneak attacks in the future
As long as people believe in absurdities they will continue to commit
    atrocities.

The AI, simply put, hates a winner. If you're the most powerful civ in the game, expect civs to hate you, and sometimes attack you, even if you're stronger than them.

If you cancelled all your alliances before signing peace, I would guess it's probably just a matter of the end of the war coalition you had put together snapping a new diplomatic paradigm in to place. The AI does like civs it's allied to, so it's no surprise they were all Polite to you while you were all allied against the Spanish. When the war suddenly came to an end and you weren't fighting together anymore, the AI civs no longer had a reason to like you and resumed hating your civ for its power.

Well it is hard to know as we have no knowledge of the game situation. I would guess that you are getting near the point were much of the good land is taken.

Sooner or later, if you are top dog the AI will start to get a bit jealous and concerned. So if you are not actively making them happy with trades and such they will get anxious. If you have tech and they do not they get upset.

If you are viewed as weak, see the advisor, they will feel free to go to war, but I suspect that is not the case here.

If this is not the case and none of this works, then post a save so we can see what is going on.

Do not be concerned about the level you play, most started some place other than the highest levels.

Well, simply being the top dog is not the reason, although it can bring you on a hitlist if done the wrong way. Other things make it look like it is, but trust me - you can build a powerful empire without getting into trouble.

There are some main reasons, why you get attacked:
        • You have resources and/or luxuries they lack, and you do not trade them. The AI is programmed to get those one way or another, so if trades do not occur, they attack. It will take a long while if they are much weaker, but even a 1-city reminder of a civ might get suicidal at some point.
        • You break deals, raze cities, obliterate other civs. All those things stick on you. Any of those actions will add up, making you look more and more like the bad guy, and making you a target earlier.
        • You are very weak compared to them (check the F3 screen) and you do not trade with them. In simple terms, you are expandable and an easy target.
        • Some rich guy payed them to attack you. If you get into a war with a rather strong AI, make sure to get alliances with some of their neighbours. Or they will - against you.
        Seriously. Kung freaking fu.

Re: Help me! Whats going on here

Pulling ahead in tech : encourages AI agression

Having a large cash stockpile : encourages AI agreession.

Having a weak military : encourages AI agression.
Conversely a strong military discourages AI agression.

AIs with few luxaries are usually much crankier than those AIs with lots of luxaries.

Raizing cities to the ground : gets all AIs mad at you. (Those also at war with that player immune during the fighting itself, but once it ends, they'll remember to be mad at you.)

Signing peace treaties when you have an active alliance : gets the AIs mad at you. (Includes the civ you are fighting being destroyed)

Redeclaring war before 20 turn up on a cease fire : gets the AIs mad at you. (Includes being brought back in by an MPP.)

Trade deal interupted prematurely: gets the AIs mad at you. Even if the reason is your trading partner had it's trade connection cut by an AI it was fighting.

            ---

I suspect that you either forgot to disconitue the alliance before signing the peace treaty. (Discontinuing is not done automaticly unless renegoate trade deals is on, and even then, it brings it up a half turn later)

Or alternatively, you raized to the ground several of that AIs cities during the fighting. Note that disbanding a city that's half foreign counts as a raize.

We forgot to mention that getting caught spying will trigger a war, unless you are quite strong. They eat it, when they catch you and you are stronger.

Thank you for your input here however I did forget to mention some things that you guys have brought up. I've only ever started one war and that was with the English, I took there capital and a few other cities not really worth mentioning and signed a peace treaty. I had to mil. alliances so I didn't need to wait the twenty turns. I also have never prematurally signed peace treaties (though the AI has several times) during Mil Alliances. Also every city I have captured I have kept, I find razing somewhat of a waste I am also pretty good about trading resources, except I never trade Uranium for obvous reasons. And yet between my first post and now The Russians have decided to declare war on me. Needless to say given the fact that I was already in a war with the French I sort of lost my temper. I forged alliances with every other nation (15) against the Russians and all of my 6 ICBMs were launched. Lets just say they won't be much of a threat. the 6 nukes was my driver and the 15 mech. inf. 35 mod. arm. and 15 rad. art. will be my putter to bring me to the hole. HAHA

Using nuclear weapons will also make the AI mad at you. I believe it's like the razing city example above - while you have active alliances with them they may not show it but once the alliance ends they'll come knocking at your door.

It sounds like you're holding your own though, which is the key. There will be times at all levels where the AI gets aggressive in seemingly random fashion, the key is to be prepared to make them pay for it.

Normally all civs will decalre war on you for using nukes first.

BTW if they do not have SDI, use three ICBM's on a given city. Otherwise you will not destroy all the units in the city. Using more than 3 will only half what ever is left of the pop, not worth the cost, but you do not want to leave MI, MA or ICBM's alive if they are in that city.

I understood ICBM's cannot be killed with nukes. MAD, and such, in real-life terms.
I've allways wanted to play "Russ Meyer's Civilization"

You can destroy them with 3 nukes to that city. If you have the save from then, try it and not that each hit reduces the HP, until the 3rd one kills all units in the city.

Be they ICBM, MI or MA.
