Using Conquests CD with installed Civ3 Complete

I have recently bought a new computer. I have access to civ3 complete and I own conquests. I have lent vanilla to a friend of mine and have no way of getting it right now. I was wondering if its possible to install civ3 complete and then use the conquests cd to play? I've tried doing this but a message came up asking me to insert the civ3 complete cd. Is there any way to get around this? Or should I simply wait until I can get my vanilla back ?

i'm no lawyer, but ... it would seem to be illegal to lend your cd to a friend while the game is still installed on your machine. also naughty to borrow civ complete unless your friend has uninstalled it from his machine first.

conquests won't run without the conquests cd - that's cd number three
complete, on the other hand, needs cd number one in the drive. so the simple answer is, you're screwed.

you can always take comfort from the fact that firaxis has saved you from a life of crime.

only two possibilities i can think of;
i) vanilla is pretty damn cheap, < $20 here in oz
buy yourself a brand spanker, and then bill your friend for the anguish he has caused the next time you catch him lurking near a pub.
ii) hey, the moderators would have my b*lls if i went into the other options here

Simply to set the record straight, I got the civ3 complete from my father who has never installed it on his computer before, and the vanilla that I lent to my friend is not installed on my machine (that's the point of this post). Therefore I'm not breaking any laws, and don't really appreciate being accused of breaking any.

Since I own the vanilla I do not think it would be against the law to try to play with my conquests CD. My friend does not have the vanilla installed on his computer either, he didn't like civ. I simply don't have any way of recuperating it right now.

I do agree with you on one thing, the moderators would be a little upset if you started telling everybody how to circumvent this little problem. In my case it is legal and if anyone knows how I can fix this I propose you email me at:

Why would it be? Due to the copy protection, he can't use his install until his friend returns the CD. Therefore I see nothing wrong with it all. I can't tell you it is 100% legal, but if it isn't, then I can tell you the laws need to be changed with respect to software using such copy protection schemes.



Jerh9e1k5, I suggest you wait until you get the vanilla back.

Or, if you can borrow Civ3 Complete indefinitely, install Civ3 Complete for the time being and use those CDs, then back up your saves, uninstall Civ3 Complete, and install using your own CDs once you get your copy of Vanilla back.

Those are the only (above-board ) options I can suggest.

I don't see any reason why not. Civ3 Complete=Conquests so far as I know. (Except, clearly, when it comes to the copy protection. )

i am not a copyright nazi, and i am certainly not *accusing you of anything whatsoever. that's just me, i like to take things step by step, spelling things out clearly along the way.

i do think there are some potential complications. i'm sure you're aware of the basic issues.

ok, firstly i can't tell for certain since you have no country flag displayed. = different laws in different jurisdictions.
in my case, yes that would be illegal.!

i'm not saying i agree with the way these things work. personally i think it's silly. you could actually be sued for using a cd that you do, in fact own.!

(oh, yes and if you're listening sid, i'm not saying i agree with piracy either. hey the guys who did the hard work have a right to fair remuneration)

heya klo ! ..

this sounds like a dead issue already and i don't mean to waste your time. but, i thought you deserve an answer, so here goes...

several reasons,
i) can't tell what jurisdiction j is in, so my comments were intended to cover as broad a field as possible
ii) can't tell from initial post whether or not j already has a vanilla install
iii) my initial impression was that j wanted to borrow -complete- from a friend, install it, then return it and use his own c3c cd to play with. that won't actually work, but if it did work, he would be breaking the law.

i would hate to see a valuable 'polytoner get busted for something as stupid as that.

i entirely agree about the copy protection stuff. authors have every right to fair payment. but seriously, the way the copy protection works right now, it just causes needless frustration to people who aren't intending to do the wrong thing in the first place.

irrelevant technical point:
actually, if j *did have vanilla already installed then yes, he could still use c3c, without needing the vanilla cd. but then, that would be illegal.

think about it, the basic question, as it is phrased above says - how can i use *two legal copies to install and play civ on *three machines. that is a no-no.!

hey, i really can't stand the frustrating way that copy protection works these days, but i don't want to see someone get busted when they're not even meaning to do the wrong thing.
