I was just trying to install H&R Block's Tax Cut Deluxe, and it asked if I wanted to remove Civ III. It thought it might be a glitch in the text, so I clicked okay, but no, it started deleting Civ III. In order to install the software I had to bypass autorun and click on Setup directly.

Tax Cut knows it won't be able to pull you away from Civ

That is not a proper way for an installer to act, It should only care that you meet its requirements.

Maybe it detected a corupption, but if it so it should mention it.

wasn't there some issue with civ3 when it first came out? I think it had to do with the folder it was in. this would apply to vanilla civ of course.

yeah I thought there was a bug where if you removed civ3, it tried to remove Windows or something like that.

I've had this problem with two other programs (Pharaoh/Cleopatra combo install and Emperor, in case anyone is wondering). The problem there is that the installshield folder names were the same for both programs, so if one was installed, the other would think that it was already installed and you thus wanted to remove it.

Che, try finding installshield's folder for whichever of the two you currently have installed (if there's a setup.ini in the folder you can likely tell from its contents, though I don't if this applies to either of your problematic programs). Once you've found it, thorm in "Civ" or "Tax" or something at the start of the folder's name and see if the other program will now install properly.

Just make a note of any installshield folders you rename, because the uninstall for that program won't run until it's named back.

That sounds like a very poorly written installer.
