I have had Civ3 for about 2 years now and love it. (I also played and loved Civ1 and Civ2 but never CtP or SMAC or others.) I have been playing with the 1.29f patch the whole time. BUT, I have never bothered to acquire or investigate Play the World or Conquests. Should I just keep having fun with "vanilla" Civ3, and wait for cIV to come out, or should I get C3C? If I get C3C, should I even bother with PTW? I also do a minor amount of modding/map creation. Thanks.

Should I get PTW and/or C3C ?

IIRC Conquests already have PTW bundled so just get Conquests and you will have both.
The question here is do you want the latest patch or the one before that - seems that some players prefer the patch before the latest one due to some issues.
As for name change, try PMing Ming. You should be able to do so.

C3C, no doubt (for me, at least)The greatest delight for man is to inflict defeat on his enemies, to drive them before him, to see those dear to them with their faces bathed in tears, to bestride their horses, to crush in his arms their daughters and wives.

As for whether you should buy it - it definitely enhances the game. If you like Civ3 enough you'll be playing it for a while (or until CIV comes out, anyway ) I would recommend it.

You should be able to Private Message Ming.
Look for a post by Ming (easily found in off topic or maybe civ2 sections), look for an icon above his post (the help delay will show which one is which), and send a private message.
Or use the email feature (another icon above his post), that will work just as well.
edit: I am using Firefox, so I don't have the help delay. Private message is the second icon from the left. The left-most one being user profile.

Weren't there some issues regarding bugs where people preferred PTW over conquests?
Either way I recommend buying Conquests and not PTW. I don't believe the rule changes are significant enough to worry about the other version imho.
If you enjoy civ3, then I would expect you to enjoy Conquests as well. But you may not get much out of the scenarios. You'd probably enjoy the epic games more. The best feature is the agricultural trait. A pretty cool trait. The seafaring trait is cool too. Becuase it makes some factions like England and Portugal more realistic. Although seafaring seemed underpowered to me, I never choose it. But that's because naval power is underpowered in this game.

Agriculture is so over powered that it's almost like playing one dificulty level lower with it than without.
Actually, while seafaring in the hands of the AI is often unpowered, in human hands it's somewhat overpowered on all but Pangena maps. My own 8 Human Player MP game I'm hosting (and playing in) features 4 Seafaring Civs on a random large map random barbs. No one is playing a Miltary nor a Religious civ. I suspect that the map generator gave me the worst type of map for the civ I chose, (a large portion of what I've explored in my starting landmass is like "So Cold")
Seafaring civs affective have a Free Magelleon's Voyage from turn 1. And half normal sinking odds. [AI doesn't take any advantage of the lower sinking odds, it just notes it's still > 0] It just uses the fact that it's Curraghs can go 3 MP.
Even on Pangena, a seafaring civ can use thier faster curraghs to make contact with those on the far side of Pangena faster than most civs. (All but the expansionist civs.)
Also note that Portugal is perfectly balanced between seafaring and expanionist. Plus a version of the Caravel that won't sink in ocean pre-Navigation. As Portugual, you should be the first civ with all contacts on any map.
The Incans (Agr + Expanionstic + Scout replacement UU] is peferatly designed for a fast start. If they don't stumble in early game from bad map or bad decisions, they can hold this lead thoughout the rest of the game.
England's UU is kind of like the Borg; all your ships will be reoutfited to become Men of War!1st C3DG Term 7 Science Advisor 1st C3DG Term 8 Domestic Minister
Templar Science Minister
AI: I sure wish Jon would hurry up and complete his turn, he's been at it for over 1,200,000 milliseconds now.

Oh, and btw, once you switch to C3C, start using the AU Mod.The greatest delight for man is to inflict defeat on his enemies, to drive them before him, to see those dear to them with their faces bathed in tears, to bestride their horses, to crush in his arms their daughters and wives.

conquests includes PTW.
You don't need to find a post by ming, you can use go to user-control (link above every page) and in that to 'private messages'. In that say: "new private message" and adress it to Ming.
But, Ming has found you already since your name has been changed already. Now I'm obviously curious to what your name wasFormerly known as "CyberShy"
