Can anyone tell me where you can find out how much of the land area you currently control if you're trying for a domination victory? I'm playing the original CIVIII version 1.29f, and can't seem to find this information anywhere.

Culture points from 1000 years old culture buildings are doubled.
If you want to increase your culture try to build culture buildings (temples, libraries) early.
If you play a religious (scientific) civ, rush build temples (libraries) during your despotic regime.
Early in the game, rush-building to win even only 3-4 turns may means you win 100-200 years.
After 500AD (even 1AD), you may rush build culture buildings, but for other reasons than the doubling effect as it will pay off too late.

If you are neither religious nor scientific, or if you are playing at higher levels forget about early culture buildings.

This was to answer your question.

But maybe the right question is: what is the use of culture? Is it desirable to have a - early - high culture? Is it worth the effort?

and especially the loss of the x2 defense versus mounted units. The musketman is a worse defender against those horsies.

I don't think the game offers a means of telling the amount you currently have, you need C3C to have that data.

Look on CFC in the utilites. I seem to recall one that help calculate it.

Am I on drugs, or are you referring to Civ2?

not drugs, lack of sleep. Yes, obviously Civ2 - so I was mixing civ2 and civ3 there. Thanks for the correction.

Speaking of confusing Civ 3 with Civ 2, I remember my very first game of Civ 3. It was during the middle ages, and I built longbowmen instead of knights because I thought they'd be better against pikemen! I did figure it out by the next game though.

and I thought it was me that was ****ed up. I don't think units get the X2 vs. horse in this game. Which I kind of miss, but oh well.

the computer seems to do well with longbowmen. I never build them myself.

I think LBs are the best unit of the MA, but not factoring upgrade paths, etc., just bang for buck.

I have seen them kill some good units and they are dirt cheap by comparison, but the lack of movement hurts.

are LB worth it when you talk of the long run as in ability to upgrade?

                              Thanks

Yes, upgrade paths were fixed, so that Sword- and Archer-class units upgrade to Guerrillas and then TOW Infantry.
