I remember in one epic game, I had oil but no rubber. AIs had both. They invaded me, of course, and my army of riflemen, cavalry, and crusaders had a hard time defending against their infantry and guerillas. But fortunately for me I was able to build bombers which basically helped keep my forces a-floating until I was able to secure a rubber then it was time

Rubber is the more important resource to have access to.

Without oil, in vanilla, your pretty much screwed trying to attack someone on tech parity with you. [Exception : Nuclear Submarine]

Without rubber, you can't defend yourself properly in Vanilla at all against someone with tech parity, let alone dream about attacking.

With Conquests, there is a new unit that Guerrlias upgrade to called the Tow Inf with Rocketry, if you can survive that long.

I'm running Vanilla Civ3 and I am just frustrated that there is no international community to be spoken of. I just wish the AI could be loyal enough HALF THE TIME for me to trust them enough to lend them resources and tech and aid when they need it against a larger rival.

Oh, that's something you're gonna have to get used to... or if you cannot, you may have to play a different game.

The CivIII AI cannot EVER be trusted. Long-term loyalty doesn't exist. Granted, that's not really unrealistic, but it does sometimes reduce the fun.

Actually, considering human history, this is realistic. Not very nice, though.

Branching off a bit, but in Conquests, TOW infantry and lethal bombers means of the two, I'd much rather have oil. It would be easier to go get rubber if you could pound the enemy with bombers, then simply move a cavalry unit in to take the city, than it would be to go get oil with marines and infantry, assuming, of course, that the oil isn't right on the coast.

Note that the end goal either way is the same: as Arrian said, to have both.
