is building a settler the only way to disband a city? i tried disbanding one by building a worker, but it just sits there holding the production.

If this is original civIII I think you have to drop the pop down, I forget. In C3C you can right click the city and select abandon and it will do it regardless of the pop level.
You have to have 2 pop in a city to complete a worker, so it will sit there if it is at size 1.

And there are certain conditions to abandon a city via building a settler.
I cant remember exactly what they are but someone here will remember.
I think having excess food is a show stopper.*"Winning is still the goal, and we cannot win if we lose (gawd, that was brilliant - you can quote me on that if you want. And con - I don't want to see that in your sig."- Beta

Two corrections to the replies:
1. You CAN get rid of a city by building a worker in original Civ3 if your city is size 1 and is not growing. You have to be at the "right" point in terms of food as one poster alluded to--hard to explain. If too much food, the city grows to 2 and instantaneously produces the worker, thereby remaining at size 1. If too little food, the city waits for the extra food to build the worker. I wish I could tell you exactly how the mechanics work, but basically all you have to do is this: Complete all the shields for the worker, starve the city, and wait a turn or two. The city WILL disband after asking for your confirmation.
2. In original Civ3 (not sure if you need the patch since I've always played with the current patch), you CAN abandon a city by simply right-clicking on it and selecting the appropriate option.Soli Deo Gloria

To disband a size 1 city with a worker build or a size 2 city with a settler, you have to keep it from producing excess food on the turn of completion - IE, the city population number must be colored yellow. (I think starving - red - works too, but I'm not sure about that.)

Good explanation. I'm pretty sure that just starving won't work, since the city itself will always produce (at least?) 2 food, regardless of the terrain. You also need to build a worker (or settler, which is trickier, but also works with a size 2 city with the right amount of food).Soli Deo Gloria

No, I am saying that you CAN destroy a size 1 city by starving it AND building a worker. I am saying that you cannot destroy a size 1 city by MERELY starving it (without also building a worker). I don't know about agricultural civs--that must be a C3C game concept. I am only familiar with the original Civ3.Soli Deo Gloria

When the Worker has reached completion, a pop up will appear asking you what you want to do. This may not work if you have an Agricultural civ though, since it produces one extra food.
The easiest way though is just to right click on the city and select the abandon city option.

Disbanding a city by building a worker, can sometimes be mighty hard with a civ that has the agriculture trait btw.Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God? - Epicurus

Much easier to disband a size 2 city via settler than a size 1 via worker.1st C3DG Term 7 Science Advisor 1st C3DG Term 8 Domestic Minister
