Any place that has standing water is a prime source for disease.

Okay, so not Mississippi River style flood plains, but more like SE Asian deltas or Nile River delta... really a wetlands area.

      okay, reasonable.

The Misssissippi River does not have flood plains in Civ II terms, it has marsh instead.

One failing of Civ III is that there's no tech that allows Marsh and Jungle to become disease-free. Athough most players would evenually clear those tiles anyway, with grassland always being better than Marsh/Jungle.

There are some diseases specific to Mississippi River IIRC.
