I name the GL poppers after the city they were trying to take (or hold). I rename all the battleships and carriers.

Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

I always use military nicknames (like Rico's Roughnecks in Starship Troopers) that is appropriate to the unit and race. Once as Carthage I named an elite unit "Hannibal's Cannibals"."And so, my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world: ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man." -- JFK Inaugural, 1961
"Extremism in the defense of liberty is not a vice." -- Barry Goldwater, 1964 GOP Nomination acceptance speech (not George W. Bush 40 years later...)

I do name my units that became Elite* - did not know it could be done with normal units.
Playing Chinese, I'd name my units related to the Dragon such as "Claw of the Dragon" "Spear of the Dragon" etc

Yes you can name all units on C3C in that way - this has saved our sanity in various Democracy Games.
Then.... First Democracy Game - Term III
"Move the Swordman west? Which Swordman? Oh... the one next to our capital? Which one? There's a stack of 10?!?! ARGH!"
Now... C3C Intersite Democracy Game
"Move Grog west? You got it."

To continue the threadjack ...
Renaming units to designate assignments is really useful, even in SP!
Examples: "Interceptor" (fighter on air superiority, especially useful!), "Pisae-Farnsworth ferry" (transport linking Pisae & Farnsworth), "Scandi invasion force" (transport(s) assigned to invade Scandinavia).
After a unit has completed (or changed) its assignment, change its name back to standard (or new) role.
Unique naming of transport units (Transports, Helicopters) can be very useful when multiples are in the same tile and some have moved. Allows loading onto the unit you want. E.g., Transport C1, Helicopter A.

The only time I really remane normal units was with ships- I gave my cruisers and battleships the name of my cities, and gave transports random personal names, like the do with real ships. More modern vessels I just gave numbers.
Outside of ships I would not name most common units-too much.If you don't like reality, change it! me

Generally, it is not good idea to rename units in the Epic game, because the name you enter sticks and does not change through upgrades; thus, when you right click on a stack you do not know is this "Grog" still warrior, swordsman, med. inf, or else...

I meticulously name every unit at creation in all my games (except settlers and workers). It gives it more of a feel of creating history, and allows you to track the exploits of a particular unit. It also helps me keep track of what units are where.
pvzh, it only takes a glance to notice that the 12th Warriors are 3.2.1, and therefore swordsmen. With mass upgrades, it's really not even an issue.Solomwi is very wise. - Imran Siddiqui

There is a preference or setting called "Show advanced unit options" or something like that. That button will only be there if you have this on.
