Unit Upgrades Question

Ever since I installed Conquests, my unit upgrades have been hit or miss at best, that is some will, some won't. I have Sun Tzu's Art of War which gives me barracks in all my continental cities and my island cities have barracks as well), but some units just will not upgrade. When I Shift-U to upgrade all, I find some cities still have the old units (I have infantry units in most cities and just found one city still guarded by a Spearman!). So now I'm left with building the new units as they come along and disbanding old units or using them for cannon fodder. All my cities are connected either by roads (no rails; none of my opponents have discovered steam power so they can't see their coal, so I can't trade with them for it, but that's another story), air or sea, so it's not a resource issue. Any ideas? Is this a bug and if so is there a reliable patch? Or am I doing something else wrong?

STAW only affects cities on the same continent. Cities that are connected by sea/air won't have barracks if you don't build them.

To upgrade a land unit you must:
- have discovered the tech for the new unit
- have the unit in a city with barracks
- have the resources needed to build the new unit in the city
- have at least one movement point left
- have enough gold to cover the cost


Shift-U will only complain about not having enough gold. The other conditions do not warrant a notice.

Note that 'one movement point' only needs the stat box in the bottom to display the digit '1'. A fraction of a movement point will do.

What did you Shift-U?
A spearman, a musketman or a rifleman?
Didn't your spearman just missed one of your early upgrades - for whatever reason - and since then, was completly forgotten by you?

I think, if you have a Spear and want to upgrade to, say Infantry, you need to have Saltpeter, else the Spear can't upgrade 'through' being a Musketman, despite going straight to Infantryhood. If you don't have the resource needed for an outdated unit along the same upgrade tree, then this would explain why the upgrade doesn't happen, assuming the resource was available in the city with the unupgraded Spear, as well as Barracks and the unit still had MP left.

No, thats not the way of it.

Several times I have been in a situation where I don't have Iron but do have saltpeter and it does allow you to upgrade to Muskets.

The Spear still being there is very possible because the shift U will only work for the type of unit selected. It does not automaticly upgrade units which were already obsolete.

If you want this problem solved, it would be best to post a save to be looked at.
