  • C3C barbarians + NoAIPatrol=0 = PtW barbarians???

It's based on one thread at Civfanatics.
    (sorry I forgot the link)

Normaly, in C3C, brabs only attack targets on NW/SE axis.
If there are no targets on those axis they fortify.

But, it seems that if you put NoAIPatrol=0 flag in your conquests.ini file they'll behave as good as PtW barbarians.

Also interesting thing to know is that, unlike PtW, in C3C it is defualt setting that NoAIPatrol=1. And that could explain passive behavior of barbarians (they won't move without target).

Another interesting thing is that it seems that even in PtW, barbarians favored attacking mostly from NW/SE axis, but since they also partolled it wasn't so obvious.

Anyway, if you want less predictable and more challenging barbarains, put NoAIPatrol=0 in your conquests.ini file.

I can only wonder how that bug feature creapt in???
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?

Well, maybe they thought that by geting NoAIPartol=1 by default will help in synchronizing MP games better.

About NW/SE part of bug, read thiis post by Justus II at CivFanatics:

I agree, the nature of the NW/SE direction leads me to believe it's a simple mistake in a formula. Each tile along that axis will have a coordinate that is an equal number of vertical and horizontal tiles from all the others. (i.e. If the barb is at tile 33,27 the next tile to the direct SE is 34,28, then 35,29, etc.). So I'd guess that somewhere, when it looks for activity it goes through some iterations, probably starting at range one and working out (so it will find the closest 'trigger' first). In that process, which I would assume involve looking at all tiles within an absolute difference in the coordinates, it's somehow requiring the difference to be equal. So instead of saying, I'm at 33,27, is there anyone within +/- 2 of 33 OR +/-2 of 27, its saying is there anyone within +/-2 of 33 AND +/-2 of 27. Not sure if I'm explaining what I mean correctly (I'm not a programmer, but I played one in college ), but hopefully you understand what I mean.

Very interesting explanation and it makes sense to me.

              I'll try the NoAIPatrol trick.
I watched you fall. I think I pushed.

I am sure that they made C3C default to NoAIPatrol=1 because they figured that's what all the players wanted. The beta testers either didn't notice the barb side-effect or once it was reported the programmers had no clue that the change would affect barbs.
