  • Crazy Idea: 1500 turn Civ

A little background on why I am such a nut-job:

I like LONG games with MAX civs. IMO, DYP & Rhye's mod are the only two playable versions of civ3 (yea - blasphemy, I know). DYP for it's 900+ turn version & all it's added goodies & Rhye's mod for it's unique (amongst civ) concepts of not settling tundra & desert, max civs, chopping forest & jungle before building cities, impassable mountains, and general slowed gameplay/growth. A combination of the two would be even better than either alone, IMO. Add to that an even longer game time (which I'll present here) - and we verge on a GREAT version of civ, again IMO.

Why do I like such long games with max civs? It's more realistic to me. It helps with the immersion 'into' the game. A week-long game or month-long game gives more of a sense of history than an 8-hour long game. Granted, with the civ3 engine what should be a month-long game will probably turn into a 3-month long game due to wait time in between turns, but I’ve decided to go ahead and take the plunge anyway.

Without further ado, the 1500 turn time sequence is thus:

Anyone else crazy enough to want to help build this monstrosity?

Uh, gee have you 'tested' this? I mean start it up and see if turns past 1000 iniatialize?

Have you EVER actually played a game through to 900 turns? Just wondering, I never have.

No, it's not tested. I don't get any complaints from the game engine though. It loads, starts up, and plays just fine.

I have played a game of DYP 2.02 through until the end using the 915 turn (IIRC) version. I didn't count each and every turn as it passed, I just assume they wouldn't lie about it.

As for doing a test past 1000, I'm doing that today...going do it right now, in fact.

You can't set the turn limit higher than 1000, I'm afraid.

I know the spinner can only be set to 1000 max. I assumed if the turn limit wasn't set, that it would be infinite. I tested a game without the limit set and it still read a 540 turn limit. So, I guess 1000 will have to be it.

No, so far as I understand 1000 turn limit is hard-coded. What anomolies seem to indicate ortherwise in the Game Editor are not 'real' just aberrations in the making of the Conquest expansion. There are other things like that too, triggers and such you can tick, however have 'no effect'. Asking and trial and error is how we gain our knowledge base. Sorry about 1000 turns. I wanted to hold back my understanding, just to see if your enthusiasm would yield different results!

Anyway, game length by feel during play can also be enhanced via modding. Such as utilizing some or any of the following; Pre-built maps with loaded 'resources'. Pre-selected starting locations on same that guarentee good starts for the AI's. Pre-built road network or basic grid. Enhances above. Large and varied start-up mix of units. Starting with 6-8 settlers all around, then restricting settler production via cities until later with some tech. Also making same expensive. This keeps the game from getting out of hand with too many cities. Also extend or set the culture expansion to 8 instead of 10. This pushes the borders out and inhibits AI city expansion and unit pollution in your territory.

Just some ideas, for I notice with these and many similiar ones that just getting to turn 100 is a long journey of a very full filled and fun game.

            Happy Modding!

As far as I know, you can't have a game longer than 1000 turns. I could be wrong though.
