  • Fun With Bombardment...

In my latest game I just spent around 20-30 turns bombarding Celtic lands with a huge force of bombers. I must have killed around 5-10million people through direct bombardment and as a result of the starvation from destroyed tiles. I had originally just wanted to cut off their capital, then it got kind of addicting. So I ended up a mass murderer. This wasn't my only incident either, I once reduced the size 23 capital of the Indians to 1 with artillery for declaring war on me in another game. It was justified though, I mean how dare they?

But anyway, this latest bit got me wondering, who else has commited similar such atrocities in Civ3? Or does everyone else use bombardment just for taking down enemy units/strategic targets. I'm not counting use of nukes, since those you take out great numbers any way you use them, so just stick to what you've done using conventional weapons. Just choose which option best fits you.

I did a similar thing. I didn't actually pay attention to the population loss too much.

I just did it because it was cool seeing all those bombarded tiles right next to each other

I forgot to take a screen shot though . It was a bad ass looking screen shot. Almost every single tile in the Aztec territory was bombarded. Very cool

I did the same thing to China a while back with Germany. This is a screenshot from earlier in the game, just because I found the way the AI recognized and fortified that chokepoint, even deep in its own territory, interesting.

Anyway, a bit later, I controlled everything from the western musket man south, and China was left with only the landmass east of the chokepoint. I stationed my entire air force in Xinjian and on carriers nearby and began a massive bombardment campaign. With eight MIs and a couple of 4xMA armies holding my side of the chokepoint, I kept ground conflict to zero until I had killed every Chinese unit in the southern half of the landmass, then moved in with MA and razed a couple of cities. I pulled back to the chokepoint and repeated the process until only Beijing and the northern tundra cities remained. At that point, I destroyed every road and railroad surrounding Beijing, and also those connecting cities. The effect was to starve Beijing from 20 something down to one and leave the entire empire defenseless. At that point, I dropped paratroopers around Beijing, razing it the next turn. By the end of the war, there wasn't a living soul on what had been the Chinese homeland, but I had a lot of free labor.

              They need to add....

In civ4, you should suffer a blow to your rep. when you ravage their society. In the real world, attacking the citizens and cities is considered atrocious to human rights, and the world looks down upon you.

Perhaps, when you bombard cities down to level 2 or 4 from level 20, it could be almost the same as a world declaring war upon you for nuking them.

In addition, what kind of defence do you have against being bombarded aside from walls and costal fortresses?

Finally, should they make an SDI system that is a city improvement other then a small wonder that can be notoriously poor in stopping nuclear assaults?

Mass murder by bombardment isn't what it used to be since C3C came around. Since then, my bombardment exploits mostly consist of wiping out ridiculously big AI stacks for no losses of my own.

I did some really gruesome things back in PTW, tho. The perhaps best/worst was reducing a size 24 Egyptian metro to a size one village with no improvements and redlined defenders by one volley from my artillery. It was defended by half a dozen mech inf.

Check out AU 503... I decided that the theme of pillaging would nicely extend into bombardment.

I don't bombard cities nearly as much as I used to, though... back in vanilla Civ3, I'd line up 50-60 Arty and just POUND.

And, let's remember, I am the (in)famous discoverer of "Mass Bombard".

In my last game I had a huge lead, nothing to do and a long border with Persia. So I built three airfields at the tips of my borders, filled them with bombers and created a nice big, civilization sized, patch of craters out of Persia.

How can you have the patience to command that many artillery?

Even with the "continue bombard" option, I still do not know how to work it. I get fed up with pressing b and moving the mouse a little bit over.

                        "Mass Bombard", by Theseus

This is for ground bombard units only:

                        1) Make sure that only the bombard units in the SoB (Stack of Bombardment ) have active movement points.

                        2) Set your targeting reticle where desired.

                        3) Hold down 'b'.

                        4) Slowly, appr. 1 second intervals, hit the left mouse button. Do not budge the mouse pointer. It's best if you know how many bombard units you have available, and stop clicking a few short of the total.

Go about your business. When you come back, mass damage will have ensued.

Also, to stop it from re-centering your screen after every bombard hit 'z' (to zoom out). Should give you a wide enough view so you can quickly bombard like Theseus said.

OH YES. I will shoot at anything that moves. Those civilians shouldn't have supported their corrupt military: they must die.

It's better to kill the civilians so the general unrest is largely reduced.

                            and it's fun

What I don't like is when it says "bombardment failed” I can understand not succeeding when up against SAMs etc, but if the opposition doesn't have them?
Could you imagine the US sending B-52's over Peking (Beijing) in the coming SINO-US War (over Taiwan) of 2008; & the President being told that not 1 bomb hit ANYTHING!!!
Just think of Viet-Nam, the carpet bombing there was massive!
