Is it me, or are the AIs in Conquests seriously more snarky than they used to be in the victory & defeat screens?
It really hit me when I got back into Civ 3 after not playing for a long time, and I got to the defeat screen and here the game is telling me how much I suck. Thanks a lot... I know I'm out of practice and I suck, I don't need rude comments after just wasting an hour of my life.
Contrast with games like Advance Wars, which, when you lose a battle, gives you tips on how to do better, and encourages you to try again.
It was nearly as bad when I won... the lame excuses for losing quotes were as bad as anything you'd see on battle.net (and it gets pretty lame on battle.net...)
And what's with the quote "The game is, like, over..." Talk about yanking me out of the immersiveness of a historical game! These sorts of changes did not improve Civ 3, IMNSHO.
Oh, and do me a favor and please don't respond by saying "it's just a game" or that I should have a thicker skin or lighten up. After a 2 hour contest, trying hard the whole time only to be defeated, it's more than a little annoying to effectively have the developers of the game show their disrespect by taunting you. I don't remember Civ 3 doing this before, but maybe I just didn't pay as much attention. Having the alternative positive experience in other games may have opened my eyes to other possibilities.
